Mothertongue Workshop: How to Build Community Through Spoken Word
Nathalie Illium (Facilitator)
Nicole Levine (Facilitator)
In this interactive workshop with Natalie Illum and Nicole Levine, we will be sharing the story of Mothertongue, our struggles and triumphs as a community organization that has grown from anmic event to a collective with three major program areas and over 30 volunteers. We will provide ideas and suggestions for creating your own spoken word organization, facilitating writing and performance workshops, and building relationships with other social change organizations in your area. Mothertongue provides opportunities for women in the Washington, DC metro area to write, present and listen to spoken word performers. We foster relationships with local women and girls organizations in order to provide financial support and visibility for their work. We also offer writing and performance workshops for women and organizations in our community.

Souls Journey
This panel will center around the issues that women of color face as writers, especially within different writing communities: How do we form writing communities for women of color? what issues influence our writing? The question of responsibility to our individual cultures-- just because we're WOC does that mean we are responsible for the work we put out there about people of color? How do we connect with the community through our writing? These are some of the topics we will be discussing, as well as a question and answer with panelists. This panel is by and for women of color only. With Angela Boyce, Lan Tran, Lea Arellano, Sonia Whittle, and Souls Journey, this panel will be facilitated by Lauren Wheeler and Meliza Banales.
